Big Mouth: A Masterpiece
I don’t know how many of you have seen, or even heard of, Netflix’s show Big Mouth, but I really want to talk about it.
Please note this post does contain some episode spoilers, but no big story lines.

Netflix’s Big Mouth
Big Mouth is one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen, yet it is so good and tackles such important issues – it’s truly a masterpiece.
Now I can’t speak for the male side of puberty, but for me it depicts the changes to the female body amazingly accurately. From getting your first period on a school trip in white shorts, to the confusing feelings of getting your first boyfriend. It’s almost as if the creators lived in my mind through my teens and then made a show about it.
The conversations we need to have
That’s not why I wanted to write about it though.
It tackles puberty in a very positive way. Yes there’s some stuff thrown in there for comedy value, I mean did any of us actually have a sex-ed teacher who hasn’t yet had sex?
The majority of it though is very real. It looks at low self confidence and body positivity, masturbation, slut shaming, drugs and peer pressure, friendships, pornography, and even STD’s and birth control.
In fact there is a whole episode about planned parenthood and how they do more than just abortions – which is a very important topic, particularly in America where funding is being reduced.
Most of all it shows that all the awkward, uncomfortable and sometimes gross things we did as kids were actually normal – we all went through the same stuff. And there was nothing to be embarrassed about!
Period Plus
One more plus – it shows the correct labels for the parts of the vagina for all those men out there who think we can just hold period blood in like we can with urine. Sigh.
So if you haven’t seen it yet, I do recommend it!
