How my slow cooker saved my life.

My slow cooker saved my life: a bit of an exaggeration maybe, but that is how it feels right now.

My lovely other half has been on secondment in Birmingham the last two and a half weeks. For those of you who don’t know, the journey (by train) between Cheltenham and Birmingham is an hour and a half – a whole hour and twenty minutes more than his original commute.

As he normally does the cooking, I thought it would only be fair that during this time I pick up the slack and help him by cooking for us. I was pretty sure that the last thing he would want to do when he got home after an hour and a half of travelling was cook, and I was right.

The only problem is, I hate cooking. It is so overwhelming for me.

I find it hard to think about what I need to do when, what ingredients I need to use, how long to cook things for and how to time everything so it’s all ready at the same time and nothing is burnt. I also find it hard being stood up by a cooker for a long period of time, or preparing ingredients. It’s all just exhausting for me, and I am sure I am not the only one.

How did my slow cooker help?

I would literally bow down to it.

Just in case you’ve never heard of one before, a slow cooker is a wonderful device you plug into your wall, throw all your ingredients into (meat and all) and leave for about 8 hours to cook it all. Not only is it a time saver, but everything it cooks tastes AMAZING because it’s all cooked together for so long that the flavours have soaked into everything.

Even veggies taste better in a slow cooker!

The last three weeks I have used the slow cooker almost every day. I planned in advance what I would cook each day, and then before I left for work I would quickly throw all my ingredients into it and leave it cooking on low until I got home. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to chop up the veg and mix everything together, which is nothing really in the grand scheme of things. Then when I get home 8 hours later it’s all cooked to perfection.

It makes cooking SO easy

Some of the recipes I’ve done have required cooking an accompaniment, such as making rice for chilli, but for the most part it’s all in the slow cooker and requires nothing extra.

For someone like me, a slow cooker is completely worth the investment – although they’re not THAT expensive. It’s definitely well used and well loved, and there’s less washing up too as there is just the one pot! (Added bonus!)

This is the slow cooker I use personally. However you can get them anywhere, and I am yet to meet one that isn’t good.

Have any of you got a slow cooker you use on a regular basis?
